Clean water is a privilege that many of us take for granted. We assume water is an infinite resource, however, the actual supply of safe, usable water is limited. This should inspire us to be more mindful of our water usage. According to ComfyLiving, the average person uses about 127,000 gallons of water each year. Here are a few ways you can reduce that number.
First and foremost, you should hire a
plumbing service to check your home for leaks. There could be leaks hiding throughout your home that would otherwise never catch your attention.
A plumbing service can locate and repair these leaks, which may significantly reduce your water bill and overall water usage.
Landscaping uses water, even if you have the most drought-resistant, low-water plants imaginable. Whether you have a full, lush lawn or just a few cacti or succulents, you should water your plants at times when the water won’t evaporate immediately. If you water in the middle of the day in summer, for example, much of the water will evaporate before it reaches the plants' roots. That requires you to water even more. By watering in the early morning or in the late afternoon, though, the plants have hours to absorb that water before the heat of the day starts turning it into vapor.
You should also consider drip irrigation if possible. This method delivers water to the roots, rather than the top of the soil. A drip irrigation hose is buried, which protects it and the water from the hot sun.
The aerators on your faucets control the flow of water, both restricting it to a certain number of gallons per minute and making the flow out of the faucet more even and smooth. States have passed newer restrictions on the number of gallons each type of aerator can allow. Be sure to check what kind of aerator you have, especially if you haven't updated your sink faucets in years. Our plumbing experts can help you inspect your aerator and make a decision about a new one if needed.
